DIY TATTOO REMOVAL · SAFETY

Do tattoo-removal creams work?
Surface injury cannot safely erase deep pigment.

Client discussing an unlabeled tattoo-removal cream during a safety consultation

FDA has not approved tattoo-removal creams, ointments or DIY kits and is not aware of evidence that they safely remove tattoos. Tattoo pigment sits in the dermis; products that exfoliate the surface cannot selectively reach it.

What can go wrong?

Acids, bleaching agents, peels, salt abrasion and unverified mixtures may cause burns, rashes, infection, pigment change and scars without removing the tattoo. “Natural” does not mean eye-safe or skin-safe.

Do / Don’t

Do: stop a product that burns, rinse as its label directs and seek medical or poison-control guidance when needed.

Don’t: sand, cut, inject, burn, bleach or apply acids to a tattoo; never use DIY methods near eyes or permanent eyeliner.

Safer next step

Ask a trained health-care professional about laser options, the tattoo’s colors, realistic limits, healing intervals and risks. Complete removal may not be possible.

When to seek care

Urgent evaluation is appropriate for severe pain, extensive blistering, spreading redness, pus, fever, facial swelling, breathing trouble, eye exposure or vision symptoms.
