Your first appointment should begin with a conversation, not a style label. A thoughtful lash plan considers your natural lashes, eye and lid shape, desired definition, previous reactions, glasses or contact-lens routine, makeup habits and the amount of maintenance you actually want.

Start with the look you want to feel

Bring two or three reference photos and describe what you like about each one: soft definition, darker lash line, airy texture, visible spikes or fuller density. A photo is inspiration rather than a guarantee because the same map can look different on different eyes and natural lashes.

What a useful lash consultation covers

1. Your preferred finish and how much daily definition you want.
2. The present condition, direction and density of your natural lashes.
3. Curl, length, weight and placement that suit your comfort and natural lashes.
4. Prior extensions, reactions, eye conditions, current irritation and relevant allergies.
5. Cleaning, makeup, sleep, workout and swimming habits that affect upkeep.
6. Expected appointment time, fill policy, removal plan and total maintenance budget.

California's Board of Barbering and Cosmetology states that applying lash extensions for compensation is within the scope of licensed cosmetologists and estheticians. Consumers can verify both the professional and establishment through the state's license-search resources.

Prepare the eye area, but do not improvise

Arrive with the eye area clean and tell the artist about contact lenses, eye drops, allergies, recent eye procedures and any product that is difficult to remove. Follow the artist's written preparation instructions instead of adding a new cleanser, adhesive test or eye product immediately before the appointment.

Do not proceed over active eye redness, inflammation or infection. The FDA advises avoiding eye cosmetics while an eye infection or surrounding inflammation is present and stopping any eye cosmetic that causes irritation. Eyelash extensions and their adhesives are cosmetic products used next to delicate eyelid skin, so ingredient and reaction questions belong in the consultation.

During application, speak up early

You will generally rest with your eyes closed while the artist isolates and applies the extensions. A quiet appointment does not mean you should tolerate discomfort. Report burning, stinging, sharp pulling, pressure, excessive watering, coughing, breathing difficulty or anxiety immediately so the service can be paused and assessed.

A patch or ingredient review cannot guarantee that a later allergy or irritation will not occur. If you have a history of reactions, discuss it before the appointment and consider guidance from an appropriate healthcare professional.

Plan aftercare before you leave

Ask for written instructions about cleansing the lash line, drying, brushing, makeup, workouts, swimming, sleep friction and when to return. Avoid pulling, picking or attempting removal with tweezers. Your natural lash cycle continues while extensions are worn, so some shedding is expected; sudden discomfort, visible damage or significant early loss deserves a direct review rather than guessing online.
