Dermaplaning aftercare:
what should wait?

Makeup, workouts and retinol do not share one universal restart time. Let the treatment performed—and your skin’s response—guide the plan.

Short answer: use the written aftercare for the exact dermaplaning service you received. Recently exfoliated skin may be more sensitive to products, friction, heat and sunlight, but online instructions range from one day to a week because treatment details and skin responses differ. Redness, tenderness or stinging is a reason to wait—not a challenge to push through.

The first priority is a calm, simple routine

Unless your provider directs otherwise, keep cleansing gentle, use lukewarm rather than hot water, pat instead of rubbing and apply a plain moisturizer you already know your skin tolerates. This is not the moment to test a fragranced mask, scrub, peel pad or a complicated “recovery” stack.

Cleveland Clinic notes that redness, swelling or tenderness can occur after dermaplaning and lists infection, scarring and color change among possible risks. That does not mean every flush is a complication; it means worsening or persistent symptoms deserve attention.

When can you wear makeup?

The most reliable rule is response-based: wait while skin is visibly irritated, warm, tender or stinging, then follow your provider’s specific timing. When you resume, wash your hands, use clean brushes or sponges and choose familiar products. “Makeup-ready skin” describes a cosmetic goal of dermaplaning—not permission to apply a full face immediately after every session.

Exercise, steam and swimming add heat or exposure

A hard workout, hot yoga, sauna or steamy shower can add heat, sweat and friction. Pool and ocean water add another exposure. If your skin still feels reactive, postpone the activity and ask for a written restart plan. Avoid treating a generic 24-, 48- or 72-hour rule as a guarantee.

Retinol and acids should return one at a time

Retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, benzoyl peroxide and scrubs can irritate skin even without a recent treatment. Ask when to restart each product, especially if the facial included another exfoliating step. Wait until the skin feels normal, introduce one active at a time and stop if burning or persistent redness develops. Our retinol and retinoid guide explains a conservative starting approach.

Sun protection matters in Orange County

Dermaplaning is not a substitute for sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher, along with shade and protective clothing. Use a sunscreen your skin tolerates and follow its label; if application burns, contact the provider instead of forcing multiple new products onto irritated skin.

Call the provider—or seek medical care—when needed

  • Redness, swelling or pain is worsening instead of settling.
  • You notice blisters, bleeding, drainage, spreading warmth or signs of infection.
  • A rash involves the eyes, lips or breathing.
  • You develop significant swelling, trouble breathing or another rapidly escalating reaction—seek emergency care.
  • Darkening, lightening or prolonged irritation appears after healing should have progressed.

FDA guidance encourages reporting serious cosmetic-product reactions and seeking medical attention when needed. A spa follow-up cannot replace a dermatologist or emergency evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

When can I wear makeup after dermaplaning?

Follow your written instructions and wait while the skin is red, tender or stinging. Resume with clean tools and familiar products rather than a first-time formula.

When can I use retinol again?

There is no universal date. Ask about the exact treatment and product, wait until irritation has resolved and restart only one active at a time.

Can I exercise afterward?

Heat, sweat and friction may sting reactive skin. Postpone strenuous activity while discomfort or redness remains and follow the provider’s plan.
